5 Photo Tips – some tips about filters, explanations, different types (contd..)

Tip 916 (Different strengths of ND filters): Neutral Density Filters allow for control over the usage of the filter, letting you get ND filters in different strengths to adjust the amount of light blocked, as well as allow for use in conditions where you find that of the lens frame, parts of the image are brighter than the others.

Tip 917 (Using graduated ND filters): Graduated ND filters are more expensive than the regular ND filters; but they allow you to have more control over the overall image; these filters allow you to control the area of the glass on which the ND effect is applied. If you see a professional looking landscape photographer having a rectangular apparatus at the end of their lens, then there is a high degree of chance that you are seeing a graduated ND filter.

Tip 918 (Polarizing filters): Polarizing filters are used for those cases where the photographer wants to increase the contrast between the clouds and sky, particularly useful when your lens really is not able to tell them apart. This is done by darkening the skies. The filter reduces the effect of reflected sunlight and the haze effect caused by heat waves, and the filter also increase the saturation level of the photos.

Tip 919 (Infra Red filter): You might have seen some specific cases of the use of the IR filter, especially in photos where the green color can almost seem like white, and the sky can seem very dark. These are caused by use of the IR filter, and is because the IR filter allows only light from the near infrared spectrum to pass through. However, this may need some amount of modification of the camera itself, and hence the usage of this filter is meant more for people who are near professionals.

Tip 920 (Polarizing filters): One of the advantages of polarizing filters is because the effect of the polarizing filter cannot be done in post-production steps, making the use of the filter fairly important for the effects it creates. The polarizing filter does not allow light to pass which is polarized perpendicular to the axis of the filter.
